Fish Oil Vitamins – What are they?

It is a well-known fact that people who regularly consume cold-water fish also have a lower incidence of heart disease in their populations. There is also a decreased mortality rate from heart-related problems in people who include fish in their diets.

It is also known that the inclusion of fish in your diet on a consistent basis is beneficial for all people, whether they are healthy, at risk of heart disease, or currently suffering the effects of heart disease. That is why fish oil vitamins have become so popular for people who are not including enough fish in their diets on a regular basis.

So why is this? What exactly does fish contain? Fish contains fish oil. Fish oil contains the essential fatty acids called Omega 3’s. There are two types of omega-3 fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (or EPA for short), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are found in the microalgae that the fish eat, and then accumulate in the fish.

Our bodies cannot produce EPA or DHA. As a result, it is necessary to get these essential fatty acids through our diets. Unfortunately, most of us are deficient in the heart-healthy fatty acids that can be provided through the consumption of fish.

The American Heart Association recommends that people eat fish at least two times per week. It contains the protein that you would get from regular meat, but the fat in fish is healthier for you.

There are different kinds of fish, some of which are better to eat than others. This is because all fish contain some levels of mercury. The bigger fish that live longer and are at the top of the food chain tend to accumulate more mercury in their bodies, and are therefore not recommended for regular consumption or not at all.

Fish oil supplements  are popular for all people who do not get enough fish in their diets, as well as for people who want the health-benefits of the fish oil without the risk of mercury content.

In my next post, I will provide further information on fish oil vitamins as part of a heart-healthy diet.
