Cholesterol and Heart Disease – Should I take Statin Medications?

In my last post, I gave you information about cholesterol treatment, which included making changes to your lifestyle such as your diet, activity level, and weight loss.  As well, prescription medications were brought up as a method of lowering cholesterol.  I know for a fact that people are being put on statin medications such as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor for preventative reasons or when they could be treated with other more natural methods.

Here is a video that I want you to watch that discusses this a bit more.  As he mentions in this video, statin drugs do not come without side effects.  Although it is interesting that the drug companies state that the side effects associated with the use of statin drugs are rare, both my mom and my dad suffered with side effects so they really are not as rare as the drug companies say they are. Some (but not all) ommon side effects include: trouble sleeping, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, and many more! A rare, but serious side effect, is the muscles breaking down, which eventually leads to kidney failure. And, what’s interesting, is that my dad was put on the statin drugs for prevention reasons because he has angina but does not have high cholesterol.  The doctor in this video mentions how statin drugs are being inappropriately prescribed to people for prevention.  Instead, if your cholesterol is in the normal range, it is better to use natural alternatives to keep it within that range.  Watch my next post for a natural product spotlight that is a better alternative.
